Prime Video has unleashed the official trailer for ‘Carrie‘, Mike Flanagan’s new eight-part reinvention of Stephen King’s iconic horror story, which lands worldwide this October. And it already has the seal of approval from the man who started it all.
King has seen Flanagan’s take on his 1974 debut novel and seems rather impressed.
“Mike Flanagan’s version of CARRIE is brilliant,” King wrote on Threads. “What it has to say about social media is shocking and true.”
King’s son, author Joe Hill, also had an unexpectedly emotional response to the trailer.
“I was watching this trailer for Carrie on Instagram and thinking how good it looks and suddenly found myself fighting back tears,” Hill wrote on Threads. “Never had that happen before, watching a preview.”
The new adaptation stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, the bullied teenager whose increasingly difficult life is complicated further by the emergence of some rather powerful telekinetic abilities. Howell landed the role following an extensive casting search which saw nearly 1,500 actors read for the part.
Rather than simply retelling the familiar story, ‘Carrie’ expands the world around King’s original novel and brings the tale firmly into the modern era. Carrie has spent much of her life hidden away at home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret, but following the sudden death of her father she is thrown into the unforgiving world of public high school.
There she finds herself dealing with a viral bullying scandal, the pressures and casual cruelty of the social-media age, and the awakening of her mysterious powers. As anyone even vaguely familiar with Carrie White probably knows, none of that is likely to end particularly well.
Joining Howell in the main cast are Samantha Sloyan (The Pitt) as Margaret White, Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton (Fire Country) as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette (My Life with the Walter Boys) as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah (The Buccaneers) as Tina, Arthur Conti (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) as Billy, Thalia Dudek (The Running Man) as Emaline, Amber Midthunder (Prey) as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard (Man of Tomorrow) as Principal Grayle.
The series also features a hefty collection of recurring guest stars, including Michael Trucco (Fire Country), Crystal Balint (The Fall of the House of Usher), Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House), Rahul Kohli (We Were Liars), Tim Bagley (The Comeback), and Heather Graham (The White Lotus).
Flanagan writes and executive produces the series, with Stephen King also serving as an executive producer. Flanagan directs four of the eight episodes, including the opening two and the final two, while the remaining instalments are helmed by Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata. This is the first time King’s debut novel has been adapted as an ongoing television series. Published in 1974, the book launched the author’s extraordinary career and was famously adapted into Brian De Palma’s 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek. A TV movie followed in 2002 starring Angela Bettis, while Chloë Grace Moretz took on the role for the 2013 big-screen remake.
The original De Palma film celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, making it a rather fitting moment for a fresh generation to meet Carrie White.
