Geeks Rule At The 2016 Emmy Awards!

This year’s Emmy Awards saw ‘geek’ shows dominate proceedings, not only picking up swathes of awards at last weekend’s creative Emmys, but some major plaudits at the primetime event last night too.

Overall Game Of Thrones walked away with the most Emmys for a single show, picking up 12 in total, including ‘Outstanding Drama Series’, ‘Outstanding Writing’ and ‘Outstanding Directing’. Unfortunately it missed out on any awards for the actors, despite Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headley, Emilia Clarke & Maisie Williams all being nominated. This brings the total number of Emmys won by GoT to 38, breaking Frasier’s record of 37 wins for a fictional series. It was also a great night for the show’s US network HBO, which picked up 22 awards overall.

Rami Malek

Mr Robot did only pick up 2 Emmys in total, but one was for Rami Malek’s outstanding performance as hacker Elliot Alderson, landing him his first Emmy. The other was for Mac Quayle’s amazing score on the show, which you can hear him discuss on Geektown Radio recently.

Other big winners on the night included The People v OJ Simpson which picked up 9 Emmys in total, including 3 acting plaudits for Courtney B Vance, Sarah Paulson, Sterling K Brown, and the Outstanding Limited Series’ award.

Brits also did fairly well, with Sherlock: the Abominable Bride taking the award for ‘Outstanding Television Movie’, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver seeing off James Corden & Jimmy Fallon to win ‘Outstanding Variety Talk Series’, and Dame Maggie Smith, winning the ‘Outstanding supporting actress’ award for Downton Abbey.

Tatiana Maslany

My favourite win of the night however goes to Tatiana Maslany for her tour-de-force performance(s) in Orphan Black. I think it’s fair to say, no actress has ever worked as hard as Maslany does on that show! If you haven’t seen it (you really should!), she regularly take on the roles of multiple, very distinctive and different characters, sometimes all in the same scene together. It truly is a phenomenal feat of acting ability, and the Emmy is totally deserved.

If you want to catch up with the ceremony, highlights from the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will air tonight (19 Sept 2016) at 10pm on 5USA.
