How do Martin Scorsese’s Newer Films Compare to the Classics?

Martin Scorsese is widely considered to be one of the greatest directors of all time. He has directed 25 full-length films since his debut with Who’s That Knocking at My Door in 1967. The most recent offering in the 78-year-old’s revered catalogue of pictures was the Irishman, a 3-hour long gangster epic that was released on Netflix. There have been countless gems over the years, with some titles more notable than others. The big question is, do the more recent offerings live up to the classics of his career in the 1980s and 1990s?

What Are the Classics?

Perhaps the last film to be considered among Scorsese’s classics was Casino in 1995. According to this Casino movie review from roulettesites.org, this is hands down the best casino-themed movie ever made and also one of the director’s most memorable offerings. It told the story of the mob moving to Las Vegas, and featured standout performances from Scorsese favourites Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro.

Scorsese was in the director’s chair for a couple of other iconic films in the 1990s. The first was Goodfellas in 1990, considered by many to be the best gangster film ever made. There was also Cape Fear the following year. In this remake of the 1962 picture from J. Lee Thompson, De Niro took on perhaps the most chilling turn of his career.

Scorsese’s other movies that have gone down as some of the best films of all time include 1976’s Taxi Driver and Raging Bull in 1980. These could be considered as the works that put the New York-born director on the map.

Modern Offerings Show He is Still One of the Best

While the aforementioned classics are often thought of as Scorsese’s best, his work has far from declined in the decades since. In fact, the legendary filmmaker didn’t earn an Academy Award for Best Director until 2006. He received the accolade for The Departed, which was a stunning crime thriller. Indeed, this will almost certainly be considered among the classics in another ten years.

Scorsese has received nominations for top honours for three of his most recent films as well. His name was put forward for Oscars for Best Director for Hugo in 2011, The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013, and The Irishman in 2019. Each of these films was also nominated for Best Picture at their respective award ceremonies. The fact that these titles got recognition at the most prestigious film event in the world shows that Scorsese is still one of the best in the business.

Looking at Scorsese’s filmography over the years and the critical acclaim each of his movies has received, his works in the last two decades are arguably held in higher esteem than his classics. Whether the older films are better than the newer ones is the kind of question that could take days to debate. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference.
