Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, SAS Rogue Heroes, See) to write the next James Bond film, with Denis Villeneuve (Dune, Blade Runner 2049) already confirmed as director.
The project marks the first 007 feature since Amazon MGM gained full creative control of the franchise earlier this year. Producers Amy Pascal (Pascal Pictures) and David Heyman (Heyday Films), along with executive producer Tanya Lapointe, are steering the next era of Bond.
Knight is no stranger to high-profile projects, having created and written BAFTA-winning ‘Peaky Blinders’ starring Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), the Emmy-nominated ‘Taboo’ with Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), BBC’s critically acclaimed ‘SAS Rogue Heroes’, and ‘A Thousand Blows’ for Disney+. His film credits include ‘Dirty Pretty Things’, ‘Eastern Promises’, and ‘Spencer’. He’s currently working on a ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie and the Netflix historical drama ‘House of Guinness’.
With Villeneuve’s reputation for visually striking, thought-provoking filmmaking and Knight’s history of crafting gritty, character-driven drama, the next Bond outing could lean toward a darker, more grounded tone, blending espionage spectacle with the psychological depth of Knight’s best work. This creative pairing signals a potential shift toward a more prestige, auteur-driven approach for the 007 franchise.
While speculation continues over who will don the iconic tuxedo, sources say no casting decision is imminent. Villeneuve is currently focused on completing ‘Dune: Part Three’, giving Knight time to develop the script before serious talks about the next 007 begin.
That won’t stop the rumour mill, though. Ever since Daniel Craig handed in his licence to kill, the internet and the bookies have been buzzing with names. Current favourites include Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train), Callum Turner (Masters of the Air), Henry Cavill (The Witcher), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), James Norton (Happy Valley), and Theo James (The White Lotus). Will we get a suave traditionalist, a gritty reinvention, or a totally unexpected curveball? For now, only Villeneuve, Knight, and the producers know, but that won’t stop fans and bookmakers from making their guesses.
This will also be the first Bond movie developed under Amazon MGM’s new joint venture with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, a big shake-up for the franchise. As we reported back in February, Wilson and Broccoli have “stepped back” from day-to-day creative control, handing that responsibility directly to Amazon MGM Studios while remaining co-owners through the new joint venture. It is a significant changing of the guard for Bond and one that could open the door to fresh ideas, from bold new casting choices to potential spin-off TV shows and expanded storytelling across different media.
We currently don’t know when the next James Bond will arrive, but we will, of course, let you know when we hear more!
