‘Superman: Legacy’: List Of People Reportedly Auditioning For The Roles Of Clark & Lois
Last night, news came out that James Gunn’s upcoming ‘Superman: Legacy’ movie, the first major film in the Gunn/Safran rebooted DCU, is about to head into in-person screen tests for the lead roles of Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane. The reports also came with six names of the people who are reportedly up for the parts. Here’s who they are, and where you may have seen them before:
Clark Kent/Superman
Nicholas Hoult

Nicholas Hoult is a yr old English actor who is no stranger to the superhero genre, having previously appeared in Fox’s ‘X-Men’ movie franchise as Henry “Hank” McCoy, aka Beast. He made his film debut in the 2002 comedy-drama ‘About a Boy’ at the age of 12, for which he was nominated for a British Independent Film Award for Best Actor. Since then, he’s gone on to star in films such as ‘Warm Bodies’, ‘The Favourite’, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, and most recently, ‘Renfield’. He’s also appeared in a number of tv shows with a leading role in Channel 4’s ‘Skins’, and is currently starring in Hulu series ‘The Great’ opposite Elle Fanning.
Hoult is a talented actor who has shown versatility in his roles. He has been praised for his performances in both independent and mainstream films. He is considered to be one of the most promising young(er) actors working today. He has confirmed in recent interviews this isn’t his first brush with DC, having lost out on the role of Batman to Robert Pattinson. Will the same thing happen with Superman?
David Corenswet

David Corenswet is a 29yr old American actor who began his acting career with a guest roles on the Netflix tv series ‘House of Cards’ and CBS series ‘Elementary’. He followed that by teaming up with Ryan Murphy, appearing in two of his Netflix series – ‘The Politician‘, where he played the lead’s opponent for student body president, and then taking the lead role in Murphy’s miniseries ‘Hollywood‘. From there he appeared in the brilliant HBO drama ‘We Own This City‘ from ‘The Wire’ creator, David Simon, opposite Jon Bernthal.
Corenswet is a talented actor with a captivating on-screen presence. He’s proven he can portray a wide range of characters, from the complex and troubled individual “River” in ‘The Politician’ to the charismatic and charming “Jack” in ‘Hollywood’. Corenswet consistently delivers engaging performances that captivate audiences. He certainly has the range to bring both Clark and Superman to life, we’ll just have to see if he gets the gig.
Tom Brittney

Tom Brittney, aged 32, is another English actor, who will be familiar to ITV viewers in the UK as he currently stars as the Reverend Will Davenport in the beloved crime drama ‘Grantchester‘. He has also had guest or recurring roles in the hit US drama ‘Outlander‘, the much underrated US series ‘UnREAL’, and Sky drama ‘The Five’.
Brittney is another great addition to the list, who has shown a natural charisma on screen, and the versatility to switch between different genres and roles. He has a knack for portraying characters with depth and nuance, capturing their vulnerabilities and strengths with authenticity, and creating memorable and relatable characters that resonate with audiences. He would be another good fit for both Superman and Clark. However, if Tom does get the gig, it may possibly leave ‘Grantchester’s DI Keating looking for another new ecclesiastical crime-solving partner…

Lois Lane
Emma Mackey

Emma Mackey is a 27yr old French-British actress who is known for her role as Maeve Wiley in the hit Netflix comedy-drama ‘Sex Education‘. She has also appeared in the 2021 film ‘Eiffel’ and the 2022 movie ‘Death on the Nile’.
Whilst she made her television debut in 2019 with a role in the BBC series ‘Killed by My Debt’, it was her breakout part as Maeve which really brought her to the public’s attention. Mackey was praised for her performance, and she was nominated for a British Academy Television Award for Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme in 2020. She also won the BAFTA Rising Star Award for her role as Emily Brontë in the 2022 movie ‘Emily’. Mackey clearly has the acting cred to bring Lois to life, but she also has some tough competition.
Rachel Brosnahan

Rachel Brosnahan is a 32yr old American actress, and if you haven’t seen her outstanding performance on Prime Video’s ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘, you’re really missing out! She began her acting career in theatre, appearing in productions at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. She made her television debut in 2012 with a guest role on the CBS series ‘The Good Wife’, then appeared in shows such as NBC’s ‘The Blacklist‘, historical drama ‘Manhattan’, and Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’. On the movie side, she’s appeared in the independent film ‘The House of Tomorrow’, starred in the Prime Video film ‘I’m Your Woman’, and in 2021, she starred in the biographical drama film ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’, opposite Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon.
Brosnahan has been praised for her performances in both ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ and ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’, and has won a number of awards for her work, including a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. ‘Maisel’ finished its run quite recently, and you can particularly see elements of Lois in that performance. She has the look, the range, and the talent, and would be a great choice for the part.
Phoebe Dynevor

Phoebe Dynevor is another Brit actress sneaking onto the list. The 28yr old began her acting career in 2009, when she appeared in the British TV series ‘Waterloo Road‘, however, these days, she is probably better known as Daphne Bridgerton in the smash hit Netflix series ‘Bridgerton‘. She also had recurring roles on the TV series ‘Prisoners’ Wives’ and ‘Dickensian’, along with appearing in the movies ‘The Colour Room’ and ‘The Lost Daughter’.
Dynevor has shown she has the range to deliver powerful dramatic moments and can switch to a more comedic performance with ease, so has the range and depth to deliver. With her undeniable talent and promising career, Phoebe is another strong contender for the role of Lois.

So, that is your three possible Clark/Superman castings, along with three possible Lois Lanes. Compiling this article, I’m rather struck by the number of actors here who have appeared in some form of period drama – ‘Mrs. Maisel’, ‘Bridgerton’, ‘Emily’, ‘Grantchester’, ‘Hollywood’ and ‘The Great’. Whilst I don’t expect ‘Superman: Legacy’ to be a period piece, it may reflect the more “classic” Superman vibe that Gunn is going for with this film. The screen tests are reported to be happening “imminently”, so, it would not surprise me to see Gunn make an announcement soon… I mean… I’m not saying this is where it will happen, but San Diego Comic-Con is only a little over a month away… We’ll have to wait and see!
‘Superman: Legacy’ is currently scheduled to fly into cinemas in July 2025.

Isn’t Nicholas Hoult auditioning to be Lex Luthor instead?
There’s a mix of reports. Some are saying auditioning for Superman, others are saying Lex. It’s not impossible he’s actually being considered for both roles (either/or obviously), which is not unheard of. E.g. Tom Hiddleston auditioned for Thor but ended up playing Loki.
